How do you test for methamphetamine or meth residue? This is a common question in the field of meth cleanup and removal.

Many home buyers worry about the growing methamphetamine epidemic, wanting to ensure their house isn’t contaminated. Furthermore, meth doesn’t discriminate between social or economic groups, appearing in affluent and low-income areas alike. Furthermore, meth residue has no odor or visual indicators. This means you can only identify it through proper testing techniques.  (This is part of why AEI Decon recommends testing every home before purchasing.)

How to Test for Meth

There are several ways to test a property for meth. However, the most accurate way involves conducting a composite wipe test and having the sample analyzed by an accredited testing laboratory.  We recommend always ensuring you use a NIOSH-compliant test. And, be sure to follow all state regulations and recommendations when testing.

Completing a wipe sample is easy once you know how to do it. However, untrained testers can make mistakes, and often miss spots with potential meth. Even so, in the state of Utah, anyone can complete a meth test for their property. Still, we generally suggest using a trained home inspector or Certified Decontamination Specialist,  to ensure an error-free test. It can also help you avoid any issues with liability, should future legal issues occur. Of course, the condition and size of the property will determine the testing locations and the number of tests.

At AEI Decon, our licensed Decontamination Specialists have extensive knowledge of testing techniques. We also know how to evaluate properties to maximize your testing dollars. This will limit the number of needed tests, potentially saving hundreds of dollars and providing peace of mind. Give us a call today, at (801) 888-6698.
